Monaghan County Council is currently participating in the Dept. of Transport’s Active Travel Towns initiative, which seeks to encourage more people to walk or cycle rather than use private cars for all journeys. The aim is to shift as many people as possible out of their cars and onto the streets when they are making local journeys. This applies to shoppers, school children, and also to you and your employees.
We all know the benefits that an increase in levels of walking and cycling can have in on our own health. It can also have a positive impact on your business with an increase in productivity, reduction in absenteeism, reduction in tiredness and reduction in stress. Encouraging people to walk and cycle more will also provide an opportunity to business owners to take advantage of footfall past their premises in new and imaginative ways (umbrella, anyone?).
The Strategy will identify a range of supports which need to be put in place in order to achieve a shift from car usage to walking and cycling. These will include infrastructure such as cycle lanes, footpaths, crossing points etc., but also ‘soft’ supports such as Bike to Work schemes and premises-specific measures where appropriate.
We want to get this Strategy right, but we need your input to do this, in two ways: Firstly, we are asking businesses to help us gather data about the current situation, and secondly, we are asking you to help us to identify what should be done in the coming months to encourage more people to get on their bike or pull on their walking shoes.
We would greatly appreciate if someone in your business could complete the Employers Survey regarding your business’s needs. We would also appreciate if you could ask your staff to give us some data via the Employees Survey. Your support and involvement to the process is very important.
The survey should take no more than 5 minutes to complete and will provide invaluable information for the completion of the baseline study.
